Prophetic. Profound. Powerful. These are a few words that can be used to define the ministry gifts of Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning, Jr. Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning Jr., is the Senior Pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church of Fort Washington, Maryland. He is married to the Reverend Dr. Jo Ann Browning, who serves as co-pastor. He is also the proud father of Candace (husband, Andre), Grainger III (wife, Courtney), and grandfather of Grainger IV and Kaylah.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Pastor Browning is a 1974 graduate of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in History-Education. In 1982, he was awarded a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University Divinity School where he was awarded the Benjamin E. Mays Theological Fellowship and listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning Jr., received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Payne Theological Seminary, Wilberforce, Ohio and an honorary degree from the A.M.E. University in Monrovia, Liberia.

Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning Jr., was called to preach in 1979, while a member at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was appointed pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. in 1983 with a membership of 17 and a budget of $12,000. Under his leadership, the membership now exceeds 8,000 with more than 100 ministries and a budget of $10 million dedicated to ministering to the spiritual, educational, political, social, economic, health, and recreational needs of the community. For nearly 30 years, Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning Jr., has also led the Ebenezer Church family in donating nearly $2 million in scholarships to high school graduates and returning college students. Through God’s power and Rev. Browning’s leadership, Ebenezer and the surrounding area have been positively impacted.  In addition to his pastoral duties, Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning Jr., has ministered extensively throughout the African continent, including Senegal, Gambia, Lesotho, Zambia, South Africa, Liberia and Egypt.

Wife, mother, teacher, preacher, trailblazer and author—Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning serves in all of these roles and more. Rev. Jo Ann Browning is Co-Pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Fort Washington, Maryland. She is married to the Reverend Dr. Grainger Browning, Jr., who serves as Ebenezer’s Senior Pastor. She is the proud mother of two young adult children, Grainger III (wife, Courtney and grandchildren, Kaylah Jo Ann and Grainger IV) and Candace Davis (husband, Andre).

Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning graduated from Boston University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications. She received a Master of Divinity Degree in 1986 and a Doctorate of Ministry from Howard University School of Divinity in 1991. While at Howard, she was a recipient of the Benjamin E. Mays and the Pew Fellowships.

2012 marks Pastor Jo Ann Browning’s 30th year in ministry. For three decades, the ministry of Pastor Jo Ann Browning has transformed individuals, families and communities. She first accepted the call to preach in 1982 at Hemmingway Memorial A.M.E. Church in Chapel Oaks, MD. For a nine month period in 1983, she served on the ministerial staff at St. Paul A.M.E. in Cambridge, MA. During that same year, her husband was appointed to pastor Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, which had 17 faithful members and a $12,000 budget. Pastor Jo Ann Browning immediately began assisting her husband and was hired as assistant minister in 1985. From 1986-1991, she served as assistant pastor and then as co-pastor. In 1998, Bishop Vinton R. Anderson, then presiding prelate of the Second Episcopal District, made the unprecedented appointment assigning Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning as co-pastor of Ebenezer. Since 2005, Bishop Adam J. Richardson has continued this groundbreaking appointment. Currently, Ebenezer’s membership exceeds 8,000 with more than 100 ministries. Jo Ann Browning has preached, taught, and facilitated workshops throughout the United States, Haiti, Bermuda, Barbados, Germany, Israel, and South Africa.

A recognized trailblazer and community leader, Dr. Browning has received numerous awards and accolades. In 2006, she received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from A.M.E. University in Monrovia, Liberia. In 2007, she was honored to preach Spelman College’s Baccalaureate Ceremony where she served on the Spelman Colleges Sistah’s Chapel Wisdom Center Executive Board. In July 2002, Rev. Dr. Jo Ann Browning was inducted as an honorary member into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  In 2012, she was also included in the 16th Edition of Who’s Who’s Publisher: Empowering Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs Around the Globe.
